Established in 2000, the John F. Welch Technology Center (JFWTC) in Bengaluru serves as GE Aerospace’s multidisciplinary research and engineering hub. Role Overview
As a Deep Learning & NDE Data Analysis Intern, you will support the Material Systems and Inspection team within GE Aerospace Research. The role focuses on developing advanced computer vision and deep learning solutions for industrial inspection using non-destructive evaluation techniques. You will work on image enhancement, denoising, reconstruction, and feature extraction for X-ray and CT data, helping improve inspection accuracy and insight generation for aerospace applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, train, and evaluate deep learning models for image enhancement and feature extraction on NDE datasets
- Work with 2D and 3D image and volume data, including X-ray and CT scans
- Develop efficient data pipelines for preprocessing, augmentation, and batching with GPU acceleration
- Design and conduct structured experiments such as ablation studies and hyperparameter tuning
- Analyze noise and imaging artifacts to improve signal fidelity and resolution
- Visualize results clearly using plots, images, and performance metrics
- Package reproducible training and inference pipelines with clean, documented code
- Optimize models for performance, memory usage, and reliability
- Collaborate closely with imaging and NDE subject-matter experts
- Present findings, insights, and recommendations during regular team reviews

Required Skills and Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Master’s degree or advanced Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Applied Physics, or a related field
- Strong foundation in deep learning for computer vision, including CNNs, encoder-decoder architectures, attention mechanisms, and loss functions
- Hands-on experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow
- Proficiency in Python and data libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, and pandas
- Experience training models on image datasets
- Familiarity with GPU workflows, CUDA concepts, or mixed-precision training
- Ability to design controlled experiments and interpret results
- Strong analytical thinking, curiosity, and attention to detail
- Ability to work both independently and in collaborative research teams
Preferred Skills
- Experience with image reconstruction or enhancement in medical or industrial imaging
- Understanding of NDE principles, imaging physics, and CT/X-ray artifacts
- Familiarity with OpenCV, scikit-image, or classical image processing techniques
- Experience working with 3D volumetric data
- Knowledge of experiment design, statistics, and uncertainty analysis
- Exposure to performance optimization techniques and profiling
