Role Overview – Automation SRE Intern

As an Automation SRE Intern, you will be part of IBM’s PowerVS (Power Virtual Server) Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform. This platform powers enterprise workloads, high-performance systems, and cloud infrastructure for global clients.

Your role focuses on reliability engineering, automation, scripting, infrastructure monitoring, and cloud operations. You will help build automated solutions for PowerVS Data Centers, reduce manual toil, and implement resiliency improvements using tools like Python, Bash, Ansible, and modern DevOps frameworks.

This role suits candidates who enjoy debugging systems, writing automation scripts, optimizing cloud operations, and working on real production systems used by global enterprises.

Responsibilities

As an Automation SRE Intern at IBM, you will:

  • Develop, test, deploy, and maintain automation code for PowerVS Data Center build and support tasks
  • Automate data collection, logs processing, and infrastructure monitoring
  • Build automation workflows for backup and restore of logs and configuration data
  • Write automation scripts using Bash, Python, and Ansible
  • Develop automation for infrastructure stack updates (firmware, PowerVC, VIOS, HMC, Novalink, NIM servers)
  • Automate processes for cloud-supporting systems like jump servers, network nodes, gateways, and TSM servers
  • Upload and maintain cloud stock images used in PowerVS environments
  • Automate administration of AIX and Linux servers
  • Manage user IDs, server credentials, and secure data workflows
  • Work closely with internal SRE, DevOps, and cloud engineering teams
  • Reduce manual toil by converting repeated tasks into fully automated scripts
  • Improve reliability, security, and resiliency of cloud systems
  • Contribute to production workflows through testing, validation, and updating automation pipelines

This is a hands-on engineering role where your automation code will directly be used for data center and cloud operations.
